Lessons from The Woman in Timnah on Learning from Mistakes

Lessons from The Woman in Timnah on Learning from Mistakes

For the last 2 weeks we have been studying the women in Samson's life. So far we've looked at:

  1. His mother: and what she had to teach us about leading by example
  2. Delilah: and her example of being persistent in our (prayer) requests to God

But there was one more woman of significance in Samson's life, who tends not to be spoken about. Like many women of the Bible, including his mother, she is nameless. As such, the Bible only identifies her by where she came from in Judges 14:1- "a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines".

What I find interesting about this woman is that she came before Delilah; yet there are many parallels between the 2 of them:

Lessons from Delilah on Persistence in Prayer

Lessons from Delilah on Persistence in Prayer

As alluded to in last week's devotional, it is almost impossible to mention Samson without mentioning Delilah- as it was his relationship with her that ultimately led to his downfall. So, once I finished researching his mother, I must admit that I found myself looking up Delilah.

For those who may be unfamiliar with Delilah, she can be found in Judges 16. Prior to meeting her, Samson had, had quite a few altercations with the Philistines (Judges 14:19, Judges 15:4-8 and Judges 15:14-17), meaning that they wanted to destroy him. The only problem was that his great strength prevented them from doing so. As such, sensing that his love for Delilah might be the chink in his armour, the lords of the Philistines approached her...

Lessons from Samson's Mother on Leading by Example

Lessons from Samson's Mother on Leading by Example

Judges 13 is all about the announcement of the birth of Samson- best known for his rendezvous with Delilah, which ultimately led to his downfall. The first person to receive the announcement of his birth from the angel of the Lord was Samson's mother (although the angel did visit a second time to make the announcement to both her and her husband after that). Within both announcements Samson's mother was also given a set of instructions.

By default of carrying Samson in her womb and receiving the angel's instructions, Samson's mother became a Nazirite. It wasn't enough that she was the vessel through which Samson entered the world to fulfill his purpose of "[delivering] Israel out of the hand of the Philistines". It also wouldn't have been enough for her to tell him what being a Nazirite involved. She had to show him by becoming one herself and leading by example...
