How to get brand clarity

The first step to getting brand clarity, especially if you have PR in mind, is to know that PR is not about you.

I know that might seem counterintuitive because it will ultimately put you and your brand in the spotlight- but it's really not, sis!

PR is about service.

When you pitch yourself to an editor, podcast host or influencer to be on their platform, it's to demonstrate how your expertise can serve their audience.

If you get the chance to contribute to their platform, you serve their audience by giving them value i.e. using your content to teach them new skills, help them solve a problem and so on.

This is the very essence of content marketing.

When you think about it this way it makes sense, really. After all Jesus said "whoever desires to become great among you, let him be [a] servant" (Matthew 20:26), right?

So your ability to win with PR and be seen as a thought leader within your industry hinges on your ability to be a servant leader.

Here's how brand clarity helps you to do this:

As mentioned last week, editors and potential clients tend to do their due diligence on you before deciding to work with you.

They do this by checking websites and, possibly, social media profiles.

Going back to the servant (leader) analogy, your job is to anticipate their needs.

Knowing that:

  • Editors and influencers are trying to see if they should collaborate with you

  • Your ideal clients are trying to see if they should work with you

Your job is to make it as easy as possible for them to reach a (positive) decision.

This will require you to put yourself in their shoes and do a quick audit of your website by asking yourself the following:

When you look at your website, is it clear who you serve? How you serve them? What the mission and vision of your brand is? If it's not, your lack of brand clarity is sabotaging your ability to get visible, attract your ideal clients and, ultimately, get paid what you want.

When I audited my website for brand clarity, I looked at everything (from my home page, about page, work with me page and more) in order to answer those questions. I then streamlined the process by compiling a checklist which I also use when getting my 1:1 clients PR ready. Want access?
